Thanks for the link Hasta - will have to give that a go.

Managed to convince myself years ago that I didn't like chocolate and haven't eaten it since!!

I allow myself the odd bounty bar or crunchie every now and then - and knowing that I can get one if i really want is enough that it does not really bother me. Mind you tell me i could never have brie again and that would be a different matter lol

I'm trying not to eat chocolate, biscuits, crisps, cheese, or consume any alcohol (as then I eat crisps and chocolate). If I fancy ice cream I have a mini milk (about 30 cals), and crisps I have salt n vinegar snack a jacks. Chocolate is the hardest one because if I bought something which is ok calorie wise such as kit kats, I'd want to eat 3 of them! Maybe when I get a bit more self control then it would be feasible. I'm not depriving myself totally, but just trying hard not to go mad!

Cheese is my downfall - I try not to buy it but the lodger keeps buying it and then it calls me from the fridge - I'll be quite happily sitting watching telly and I can hear it calling!!

LOL stella! I know what you mean, chocolate, chocolate biscuits, Seabrook crisps and Lancashire cheese all shout at me to eat them from inside the cupboard/fridge! So I rarely buy them!

I'm sure you will find the strength to resist Stella! Good luck though!! My worst nightmare would be if something I really craved magically appeared in my fridge as well (sometimes hubby does it and gets told off until he's eaten it all!!)

My Nan is coming round tomorrow and she always brings several months supply of crisps, chocolate, biscuits, cake bars etc. despite me telling her not to as I don't like the kids having lots of 'treats' as they make them hyperactive and its also not teaching them sensible eating habits for later life (and I struggle to resist eating them myself). She never listens as in her world, food = love. A philosophy which I am working really hard to get out of my own head!!

oh 4angels - that must be a hard one as it must be like talking to a brick wall trying to get that message through.

A hard area for me is at work there are always huge tins of chocolates floating about, birthday cakes are a regular as is sending out for takeaways and putting on buffets. Most people are really understanding and will just pass them straight past me or ask me once if I want one then leave it at that - but some people do try and "coax" you into "just one won't do you any harm" some people are even nice enough if they are buying the buffet to ask me what low fat thing i want - which means I can "join in" - but it is still a bit of a minefield so i know where you are coming from.

hopefully your Nan will not be too overloaded with goodies Smile

It must be so difficult at work with buffets and birthday cake/chocolates and the old 'well just have one' is so fatal isn't it?!! I know I couldn't do it!! So you must have stronger willpower than me!!!

You should have seen what my Nan used to feed me as a kid at weekends! 2 x fried bacon butties for breakfast (dipped in fat) on white bread, chicken dinner with york puds & roast potatoes (cooked round the meat), endless homemade fairy cakes, rice pudding, and apple pie (thick crust) & custard (gorgeous though!!), as well as endless crisps, biscuits, chocolate etc!! Food = Love. As a kid you eat until you burst really!!

I don't eat meat or fish anymore but after having a conversation about food with her recently and explaining what I do eat she offered me a few minutes later a nice 'ham on the bone' or salmon sandwich on thick white bread with a slab of fruit cake for afters and sending me home with a bag of stuff including a brussels pate, bacon quiche and pork sausage rolls!!!!! I know some of it was meant for the kids (sausage rolls at least) and I must sound ungrateful because she really is good at baking and doing traditional meals....but that doesn't include veggie or low fat ones!! Bless her!!!!

Anyway...hubby does sometimes put the 'treats' ontop of the cupboards but unless we got rid of the chairs I can still climb up to get them and consider it exercise therefore I am allowed to eat 3 kit kats and 2 packets of crisps !!!! Laughing Sometimes he puts them in the staff room at work but he's off this week! I think my 1 lb loss has given me motivation and hopefully I will resist! If not we might have to swing by the homeless shelter and drop them a few bags off!!

4angels - lol at the "working off calories climbing up to get the kit kats" The food your Nan makes sounds so deadly - I think it's a generation thing as my Mum in law is the same - when I take her shopping I really cringe when I see what she buys and I try and make subtle suggestions - but even with her being diabetic I can't get her to stop buying full sugar coke - it horrifies me at times the amount of sweetie tubs that are always on display. she loves me to bits though so she knows I am only nagging cause I care but it falls on deaf ears anyway.

I must admit I have it a bit easier as my lads are older so don't have stuff for packed lunches in - there was always loads of junk when they were young enough for them, sweets are a really rare treat now and the last time we got a some of the bags of sweets from asda and i divided them up into 4 tubs not 5 everyone complained as there was too much

ps the bit about the giving you salmon and ham on the bone after explaining that you don't eat it is funny lol - it reminded me of Mrs Doyle from Father Ted and visitors that didn't eat sandwiches and she just kept on making tray after tray "sure you'll have a sandwich, gowan, gowan gowan" lol - poor you

LOL Irnbru!

Or 'Nana' in the Royle Family 'Will she have a bit of wafer thin ham Barbara?' about Anthony's vegetarian girlfriend!!

Yes its definitely a generation thing with my Nan!! If she comes to my house it takes me ages to persuade her to have a cuppa but at hers its definitely 'have this cake, try this other one I made as well, have another piece, take the rest of the cake home with you'.

My parents have their moments when they are the same as well, though they are a lot better than they used to be as my dad had a heart attack and has diabetes now as well. My Dad eats a lot of sweets which clearly is not good for a diabetic!
So I know what you mean about trying to be tactful because you care about their health but also not nagging them too much as they don't always appreciate it! It's tough indeed! Smile

I'm lucky I suppose because when my mum cooks for me she is quite a healthy cook. She didnt used to be - I can empathise with the bacon butties on thick white bread dipped in fat lol.

My problem is my lodger - she just eats crap!!! I ended up having a packet of spicy Nik Naks (my favs at the min) last night as she'd bought them for me. My fridge is full of full fat coke, cheese, chocolate etc everything that you can think of that's bad for you.

oh that must be so hard to resist with it all being in your face all the time - good job on having all that crap around and managing to avoid it.

Well i am going out with mates tonight for a meal and a drink (or 5 lol) so am thinking vodka & diet coke and hopefully will have something healthy on the menu - i must check the calories in vodka - maybe I should alternate with soft drink then drink?

I also have a college night out on Saturday as we are all but finished now - its far enough away that public transport is out of the question so poor hubby is taxi for me - it will be nice seeing some of the people that have dropped out or gone on to uni after the first year, but some folk are just plain annoying lol.

I am sure it will be more fun than i think it is going to be, there have been some really great people that I have met over the last two years and it more than makes up for the annoying ones lol

Lucky for me that I've persuaded my brain to avoid the stuff she eats!!

Enjoy your nights out - good idea about alternating with diet coke - one trick I do is to buy a vodka and coke then when its about halfway down buy a diet coke and keep adding to it - that way you still get the taste it's just watered down!

Hope you enjoy your nights out Irnbru, you definitely deserve them after working so hard! I'd be on the floor after 5 vodka's these days so I'd probably do what you said and interchange with soft drinks, or like stella said and water it down a bit. Have fun tho!!

Admittedly I've had to give up alcohol at the moment as it leads to the munchies for me during and after drinking alcohol, and also given up tea, coffee and hot chocolate (which I'm finding tougher!!). I'm mainly drinking water or no added sugar cordial.

You really are strong stella to resist the rubbish that ends up in your fridge from your lodger, it must be so difficult but you are doing amazingly well at resisting, just look at all the weight you've lost!!

Today's Nan visit wasn't as overloaded as normal cos we are going on our holidays Saturday morning we didn't get as much stuff...just jaffa cake bars, jammy dodgers, kit kats, dairy milk bars, party rings, wotsits and........STRAWBERRIES!!!! (I think we have had a bit of a breakthrough here guys!!!), and some spending money which I am eternally grateful for as I've just had to buy them all new summer footwear (but she really shouldn't!!!).

Anyway the scales were still hovering as though they were going to tip a pound lighter (but sadly didn't) so I think I have the willpower to resist 'naughty' food... for now at least Shocked Laughing

Tell me about it! If I go out for a few too many drinks the night always ends up with a falafel wrap. And there is no point getting a falafel wrap without a portion of chips is there?! (or so my drunken brain likes to tell me)

Haha, I used to get lots of goodies like that, but now I'm vegan she sends me home with fruit, pittas, hummus and random things she finds that I can eat. I do get a lot of crisps though, that I'm now donating to my housemates.

Also, just a point on the forum here. It seems that this thread is really active. Would it be worth having a sub forum for chit-chat type threads and then one for dieting and healthy eating? Just a suggestion!

I thought this was the chit chat thread, just for blether stuff - but healthy eating and exercising is our main focus so I suppose many things relate back to that so it often overlaps - maybe when the forum has more posters ? I like how there are new posts on so many different threads with everyone adding their own experiences of it - a chat element is bound to creep in ?- I have never been as active on a forum before so not sure if there is a better way - I just love the forum Smile

I am a bit gutted as I got my graded unit test and I passed but i got a B - I really wanted an A as my other two were A's and I got highest marks in the class and this last one I barely scrapped a B - I am confused as I did study really hard - but i usually choose the Psychology and History topics and I chose Politics and sociology so don't know if I just picked the wrong subjects - I am trying not to panic about uni now as I wanted to start with having 3 A's just to know I had that under my belt but now I am thinking what if I am not as good as I think i am and I am not going to cut the mustard at uni - or maybe I needed this to not be too over confident.

Maybe I just need to get a good proper gym session done to blast the endorphins.

Carol

Irnbru you've done amazingly well!! You are always busy from what I can gather and you work incredibly hard at everything you do. I think a 'B' is a good grade and you should be proud of all you have achieved. I hated Sociology and didn't even pass it because it was just not my thing and what I know about politics you could write on a postage stamp!

I know its not what you wanted but you've done well in everything else so don't be so hard on yourself. Like you said it may just have been the choice of subjects that weren't quite your cup of tea.
My hubby goes into 3rd year of his degree in September, and with working, helping me with the 4 kids and their various needs, studying & me nagging him, he has had to accept that anything above 50% in modules is ok, even if secretly he hoped for a lot higher and feels gutted that the grade didn't reflect his effeort! Time is the biggest issue really for him.

So I kind of understand a little of how difficult it is to fit studying in around the rest of your life and how disappointing it is when you don't get the marks you feel you have tried so hard for whether it be a time issue or a taxing subject - so please don't be hard on yourself!!

I don't know what you are planning to study at uni and I know you said that you wanted the highest grades to give you a good start but it sounds like you have the right hardworking mindset (which is half the battle), and with your determination I am sure you will succeed in whatever you do! Best of luck!

aww 4 angels thank you so much - that is such a lovely response - my hubby has said just about the same to me too - I am such a perfectionist I am taking it to heart a bit too much - I am just reeling a bit from it today - I am sure tomorrow it will not seem so bad - thanks again Smile
