I'd really love a treadmill, just havn't got the room for one. If I didn't have kids my conservatory would be an exercise room rather than a playroom.

We don't have the space for a treadmill either really (luckily it folds up but it still takes up tons more room than we imagined and it limits you to where you can put it because of needing a plug socket). Ours is in the back room which is a playroom but I have had to move a lot of the toys into the lounge except for the play kitchen as that is too large!! Toys never stayed in the playroom anyway they were all over the house!!
The computer is also near the treadmill so I can put iplayer or youtube on and catch up with programmes at the same time, mainly when the kids are in bed. We are over-run with stuff everywhere though despite taking 10 bin bags of toys and kids books to Oxfam the other day!!! Not sure how long the treadmill will last as my youngest child keeps 'posting' drawings and other things wherever she can on it and I have to check it for obstructions every time!!! Rolling Eyes

I just know if I had it folded up in the corner, my two boys would be climbing all over it and do themselves an injury.

The last time I put something other than toys in there, a folded up double pushchair. My 3 year old managed to fall off it and hurt his head. After an afternoon in A&E on a bank holiday, I've learnt my lesson.

Ouch! So far no-one has swung off it, but we've only had it 1 week so there's plenty of time yet!! The plan was for it to go in our bedrooom ha ha ha far too large. We took measurements but the thought and weight of carrying it upstairs put us off!

ahh I remember the bliss of the lads being old enough not to have toys in the livingroom anymore - you can imagine what it was like when I had "3 under 3" lol. I have managed to get the crosstrainer in
my bedroom and the weights gym actually folds up so fits in the downstairs hall - but yeah can understand about the kids using it as a climbing frame. I would love a treadmill too - but think that would be a bit greedy - maybe when the lads start leaving home I can have a gym room.

I have a question for those of you who exercise regularly, how long did it take you to build up to a substancial amount of time u were able to exercise? Cos i got jogging not often enough, and can do about 1m 30 seconds before i need to walk, i want to do it regularly like every day but i just seem to be so unfit Sad
thanks! x

Don't know if it is the answer you want to hear or not Flax, but it did take me a good few months before it started to get a bit easier and i could do it for longer and longer - i can't believe how much more i can manage that I couldn't even begin to attempt when i started.

i just take it in small steps - i just set myself a target to focus on - for example at the moment I was on the treadmill and started at 4 km/hr for 5 mins, bumped up to 4.5 then 5 for the last 5 mins - and now I start at 5 on incline 1 %, then up to 5.5 after 5 mins with change to 2 % incline depending on my heart rate i bump the speed to 6 - but at the moment i have to drop the incline back down to 1% - so my target is to manage the last 5 mins at speed 6 with incline at 2 %. the good thing is that i had to stop pushing myself as even though i felt allright my heart rate was going way way too high - so had to stop and lelt it come back down a bit - now my max heart rate is much lower in general so even though i am still as knackered by the end of my gym session i am still fitter than i was.

when on the cycle machine i was managing to set my target so that the 15 mins I covered 5 km - now I am up to 6km covered in the same time - so i am trying to maintain that consistently as it is a recent target and am increasing the resistance. I keep on moving my target for the crosstrainer too

I didn't mean this post as a boast of my accomplishments - i just wanted to give an example of how little increases all add up and it just takes time and gets easier but you may find that you still want to make it hard anyway ( or maybe I just have a masochistic streak hehehe)

If i try to jog for 30 mins (not including the minutes ill spend walking between each jog) each day or every other day, then hopefully ill start seeing improvements in a few months!

Its just getting the will to start and stick to it!

Ive got a new job where im gonna be sitting behind a computer all day so i tihnk i need to start jogging in te evening round my local park! lol Very Happy

It may not even be months - the first 2 or 3 weeks are the hardest, once you push past that it gets easier and your fitness level builds up from there - from there your body "settles in" to the routine and doesn't protest as much Smile of course it could be different for you - it will depend on how naturally fit you were to start with - you never know it could click in sooner flower

I'd love a treadmill - unfortunately I live in a two bedroom terrace with a lodger and two big dogs!! Nowhere near enough room!

Bloody exercise - Page 7 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Bloody exercise   Bloody exercise - Page 7 I_icon_minitimeTue May 12, 2009 1:06 am

I went to the gym last night and it was really busy - I usually go to the upstairs gym which is smaller and has a better view and is normally quite quiet, but when i left the gym at 9pm all the treadmills were being used then i went for a swim and it was like singles night loads of young guys all posing and girls in full make up and skimpy cossies - it was all very surreal.

I am just going to do my weights bench set, gym ball and aerobics this morning then pop along to the gym for a swim as I did well with the cardio last night and I can have a full cardio session tomorrow as I don't have college.

I love how focused I am feeling and am a bit heartened by the fact that the scales may not be moving much but the inches are still dropping off.

My gym is considering doing a biggest loser type of promotion where you pay to register and are assigned a trainer and a team and it will be like personal trainer sessions and boot camp sessions and whomever wins will get the registration money - so I am watching for that being advertised and keeping my fingers crossed that enough people will be interested and I will definitely be able to shed some inches before Uni - so am really excited about it.

that's great, good for you, sounds like a plan!
i'm off to the gym today, went swimming last night, had to go in medium lane as the slow lane was being hogged by a family that wouldnt budge to let anyone else swim there! lol!

i don't run outside, as i have a gym membership [mine's £36 a month and includes everything, pool, gym, classes etc] i use their treadmill
walking is good exercise though stella, you're doing something there! have you got a pedometer? you can see how many steps you've done, they reckon 10 000 a day is the recommended amount; you'd be surprised how much you do! Very Happy

I am just back from the gym and did my treadmill bit then went for the aquafit class then swam 320 metres - so feel refreshed but not as wabbit as I normally feel.

Stella - we are starting the pedometer steps around the world challenge at my work next week - i did a trial run starting on Sunday and was up at over 18,000 steps yesterday and then i pressed the flippin button and it went straight back to zero - so had to start again and am back at 6,000 odd but would have to go some for the 10,000 a day yet - and now I am going to sit on my bum and do more study for Tuesdays exam but I am definitely feeling the urge to go for a wander to bump it up again so I think it's going to be a great motivator.

i bet it is!! Laughing Laughing
walking is one of the best forms of exercise, after swimming and running, or so i'm told and it all adds up!

i've got an 'omron walking style' pedometer which i bought from amazon about a year or so ago, for about £20 but it's got a few extras, however i had a look on there for a colleague of mine the other day as she wanted to shop around for one as she's trying to lose weight and they've gone down in price a bit now

it was weird as it was all sort of more fat burning zone than cardio high heart rate so it almost felt like I had not done a gym session lol - when I do my high cardio - about 2 or 3 times a week I know I have had a workout -I am actually in two minds about going to the gym today I feel a bit sluggish - study seems to be more important at the moment - and i don't have a morning class so I can spend longer in the gym before I head off to college. plus I am off this weekend so I can go at the weekend during the day too - I think i have talked myself in and out of it about a dozen times today ( especially as my little voice is saying that I have done my weights and toning today)

maybe watching the biggest loser will spur me into moving lol.

we watched that, jamie really annoyed me today, glad angie had words with him, i can see him coming out though ie via elimination or just packing up and going home if he doesn't get his act together
miriam has really done well hasn't she? flower in fact they're all trying really hard but i think jamie has lost heart, hope he stays and gets on with it, he could do really well drunken

did you end up going to the gym after all? bounce Basketball

ps know what you mean about cardio, when i've had a good run [i'm working on increasing my speed to up my mileage] i know i've done it, but it's a good tired feeling cheers

no I have not been - I suppose i still have time - the gym is open until 11pm lol - but I have been feeling tired today so I think i am going to give it a miss.

yes Jamie needs to toughen up a bit - I don't think he is going to last through the next eviction - his dad seems to be telling him what he wants to hear rather than what needs to be said, he should be encouraging him not to take the drink not urging him that he deserves a night out (there is a time and a place for everything) and in the bedroom when he was talking about quiting his dad was telling him that maybe the pace was too tough for him - I think it's quite sad.
